Overview

To compute a company's Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, Greenly uses a two-step approach: an initial monetary estimation to quickly identify the most significant emission sources, followed by an activity-based fine-tuning stage to sharpen the results and build concrete action plans. This article explains both steps and why each one matters.

Step 1 — Initial estimation (monetary approach)

Using the company's accounting files, GHG emissions are estimated across the three Scopes via a monetary approach. This initial estimation can be carried out almost instantaneously, since accounting files have already been formatted and annotated by the company's financial teams. Its purpose is to identify the most significant emission sources, so that calculations can be fine-tuned at a later stage.

Step 2 — Fine-tuning stage (activity-based approach)

By collecting physical data (kg/lbs purchased, km/miles travelled, L/gallons consumed, etc.), the GHG emissions of the most significant sources previously identified are specified using an activity-based approach. This step is crucial because it fine-tunes the results and makes it possible to recommend concrete action plans.
