IEA electricity emission factors updated to the 2025 edition, 2020 to 2023 coverage refreshed
IEA electricity emission factors are a cornerstone of carbon accounting: they power Scope 2 calculations for every company consuming electricity, and also underpin key Scope 3 categories, such as Category 11 (Use of sold products), making them particularly significant for industries like electronics.
The IEA released its 2025 edition of the Emission Factors package in early 2026, with the most recent confirmed data covering electricity activities up to 2023. We used this latest release to refresh our 2020 to 2023 electricity consumption emission factors and to improve our calculation methodology, ensuring all years now reflect both the latest data and a consistent, more accurate methodology.
These updated factors cover around 200 geographic areas worldwide and span six distinct emission factor perimeters per country across Scope 2 and Scope 3. For companies reporting on 2024 or 2025 activities, we recommend using the 2023 factors as the closest available proxy until the IEA's next edition is published.
