Overview
This article explains what segments are, how to create and manage them, and where to use them on the platform. It also covers how segments differ from dashboard filters and what to know before you start.
Key benefits / use cases
Follow the emissions of one business unit, product range, site or market
Build a view once and reuse it, without re-applying filters every time
Compare the same slice of your business from one year to the next
Set reduction targets on a specific part of your business
Recreate the reporting structure your teams already use
What is a segment?
A segment is a saved, named view of your emissions. You build it from your analytics tags and other filters, then reuse it across the platform to see only the emissions that matter for that part of your business. For example, a segment can show the emissions of a region, a site or a product range.
Segments replace perimeters, which you could previously create and use only in Actions. It’s the same idea with a new name, and you can now use it in more places.
Before you start
A segment filters data you already have, so the best time to create one is after your first year of data is complete. Make sure your activities carry the analytics tags you want to filter on: a segment is only as good as the tags behind it.
How to create a segment 1. Go to Information & settings > Segments.
Click Create.
Give your segment a clear name, for example “Product range – Machined parts”.
Choose the analytics tags and other filters that define the slice.
Save. The segment now appears in your segments list.
The list shows each segment’s name, its emissions for the selected year, and when it was last updated. Click a segment to see its details, edit it or delete it.
Where to use your segments-Analytics: select a segment to narrow every dashboard to that part of your business. Dashboard filters keep working inside the segment.
Actions: use a segment when you set a reduction target, to track progress for that part of your business only.
More places, such as exports and resources, are planned.
Segments vs. dashboard filters Segments sit above all dashboard filters. A segment defines the part of your business you’re looking at; it’s saved, named, and reused across the platform and across years. Dashboard filters then narrow down what you see inside that segment, on one dashboard at a time.Good to know-Segments work across years. Analytics tags are consistent across reporting years, so one segment can be reused year after year.
Segments can overlap. The same activity can belong to several segments.
Segments never change your total footprint. They filter your existing data; nothing is recalculated.
FAQs###Can I create custom filters for my business units or products? Yes. Save any combination of analytics tags and filters as a segment.
Can I set a reduction target on a segment?
Yes. Choose the segment when you set a target in Actions. What happened to my perimeters? They’re now called segments and appear in your segments list. [confirm]###Why don’t I see any emissions in my segment? Check that your activities carry the analytics tags the segment filters on, and that data exists for the selected year.
Can I see one segment across all my entities?
Not yet. Segments currently work within one entity.
