This article explains how to complete the mandatory task “Identify emission sources".
Identifying your emission sources is the first mandatory step to build an effective report to then build an effective climate strategy. It means identifying the activities across your operations and value chain that generate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions so you can measure them accurately and focus efforts where they matter most.
1. Why is it necessary to identify your emission sources?
Identifying your emissions sources is essential to:
Define a clear and complete scope
Ensures all relevant emission sources across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 are included, helping you avoid overlooking significant categories.Clarify the data you need to collect
Helps you understand which activity data is required for each source and which teams can provide it (e.g., Finance, HR, Operations, Procurement).Anticipate and prevent data collection challenges
By identifying data owners, sources, and formats early on, you reduce the risk of delays, missing data, or last-minute blockers.Enable actionable insights
Ensures your results are detailed and accurate enough to identify key emission drivers (such as suppliers, sites, or activities), supporting informed decision-making and effective reduction strategies.Strengthen data quality and reliability
Provides a structured and transparent approach that improves traceability, supports internal reviews, and prepares you for external reporting or audit requirements (e.g., CDP, SBTi, CSRD).
2. How to complete this task?
Complete this task at the beginning of your assessment to ensure everything is set up correctly from the start.
Go to the “Progress” page and select the task**"Identify emission sources".**
Once you have reviewed the Getting Started page, go to the “2. Survey” tab to begin.
From there, simply answer the questions presented to you to move forward.
The following section differs from the previous version: modules used to be automatically deployed at the end of the survey, whereas in the new flow you choose which modules to activate based on the questionnaire recommendations.
Once you’ve completed the questionnaire, our AI agent analyzes your business profile to identify your emission sources and recommend the most relevant data collection modules.
Go to the “3. Collection plan” tab to review your recommendations.
You’ll see a list of modules tailored to your business:
**Mandatory modules (already added) **
→ These are essential for any business (e.g. financial transactions, buildings) and are required to complete your assessment.**Recommended modules (green tag) **
→ These are strongly suggested based on your profile and can be of two types:Essential for completeness→ These emission sources are not covered by your financial transactions (spend-based) data
⚠️ If you don’t add them, these emissions will be missing from your assessment.Accuracy gains→ These emissions are already estimated using spend-based data, but adding an activity-based module will significantly improve precision.
Other suggested modules→ Potentially relevant based on your business profile, but less critical.
💡Spend-based vs activity-based data Your financial transactions module provides a broad estimate of emissions based on spending (less precise).Activity-based modules use real operational data (e.g. energy, fuel, distances) to deliver more accurate results.
You can add modules up to your package limit. If you exceed it, you’ll be notified and can choose to upgrade.
If you don’t see the module you’re looking for, browse the full catalog at the bottom of the page.
If you want more details about a module, simply click on it in the table.
You will then be able to see what it covers, the type of data required, and the emission scopes included.
You can also find additional information about each specific scope if you need further details.
Once you validate your selection, the platform will automatically adapt to your situation.
