Overview

This article is your starting point for completing the Chemical Products module. This is an advanced module — rather than uploading data yourself, you provide a structured file that Greenly analysts will process and match to emission factors on your behalf. This guide walks you through each step and directs you to the right detailed article.

Key benefits / use cases

  • Get a precise, activity-based carbon footprint for your chemical purchases, going beyond generic spend-based estimates.

  • Applicable across industries: cosmetics, food & agriculture, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and any business that purchases chemicals at scale.

1. Which data should be included in your data collection file?

The aim of this module is to calculate the impact of your company’s Chemical purchases during the studied year. The temporal scope of the study is the financial year of your GHG Report.
⚠️ To be processed by Greenly, the data provided must be in French 🇫🇷 or English 🇬🇧
🎯 The data collection file contains two type of data: mandatory and optional data

  • Mandatory data: It is the minimum necessary data to calculate the amount of CO2e related to this regulatory entry’s activities → Without it, no emissions can be computed.

  • Optional data: any additional data will increase the quality and granularity of the analysis, and provide you various areas of analysis.

List of mandatory data:

  • A name that makes sense in AT LEAST ONE of these columns (the more the better):

  • Internal ID

  • Main material

  • Chemical family

  • Name

  • Unitary Weight

  • Quantity (=1 if your unitary weight is the total weight)

  • Unit

List of optional data:

  • The graal of all: the CAS number

  • Allows to uniquely identify a specific chemical product (like a postal code do for a city)

  • Comment

  • Entity

  • Unit Price

  • Currency

  • Entity country

  • Business Unit

  • Supplier

Source restriction: Emission factors are sourced exclusively from the ecoinvent database.

2. How to upload your data to the Greenly platform?

To upload your data, click on the corresponding task on the Progress page or go to Data > Data Collection > Downstream transportation with products weights.
1/ Use the Greenly template to upload your data. Click on "Bulk import". The template is downloaded in the same language as the platform. When using it, we ask you to fill the English one with English data and the French one with French data. You can always download the other language on the READ ME page of the template.

Please make sure to fill out the mandatory fields.
Import your data in the section “Upload file”. You can also provide additional files to prove or support the data you’re submitting—for traceability and auditability, in the section “File Information (optional)” 2/ Once your data uploaded, click on**“Submit for analysis”**. An analyst will review it and complete the module.
If you do not have the necessary information to complete this module, you can click on "Skip” at the top right of the page.

3. Frequent errors in data format

Advanced module:

  • Column 1: Unitary Weight AND Quantity

  • Always write with one point for the decimal: 65700.50 → Correct

  • Numbers such as 65700.50 (Sixty Five Thousand Seven Hundred point Fifty) written in the following manner can lead to mistake during the processing:

  • 65, 700, 50

  • 65.700, 50

  • 65.700.50

  • Column 2: Unit

  • If you include non-mass units, we'll need to make assumptions about the items, resulting in less precise calculations. However, if these are the only units you have available, they're better than nothing.

  • Mass units (kg, mt, short ton, LBS) need to be prioritized##4. Review your data and read your results

Once you have uploaded your data, you can flag the expenses related to the module to avoid double counting and access your results. To do so, please read the related article.
