Investments : Processing guide

1. Align with the client’s specific requests

👉 Clients might have specific requests for data processing → they will have an impact on which module format you should opt for

🎯 Examples of common requests

  • Suppliers or other custom EFs (outside of Greenly’s database):

  • The client must have paid for their integration, and the EFs should have been validated by the R& M team

  • These EFs must be added to the EF Manager as company-specific EFs before you can retrieve their IDs

  • Example 2:

  • [TO BE POPULATED]

2. Choose the module that best fits your needs

🈵 Manual processing (Advanced module)

⭕ 100% automatic processing (E2E module)

  • To be used as much as possible because it allows client to be fully autonomous from data collection to data processing.

  • ⚠️ Case where this module cannot be used

  • Other asset type than Listed/Unlisted Equity, Bonds, Loans

  • Indirect investments

3. Data Processing

The goal of an activity-based study is to categorize a client’s data, meaning associating each activity of a specific category to the most suited emission factor.
⚠️ if you are working on a multi-year account, don’t forget to check the Rebaselining section.

🈵 Manual processing (Advanced module)

💡 When you do an analysis for a company, you should first check if a similar analysis has been done for the previous years, and check with the deal owner/client if a rebaselining of the data has been planned.

Set up the file

  1. Open the client's completed data collection template file and verify it contains all required information

  2. Create a copy of the Portfolio Analyzer file, save it in the client folder - DON’T EDIT THE MAIN FILE - Portfolio Analyzer

A. Data collection template tab

  1. In the Data collection template tab, select the option of investment type in cell D10 - this helps adjust the column headers in row 14 to best fit the investments

  2. Write the year of the GHG assessment and the language

  3. Copy and paste as values the data collection template into the Portfolio Analyzer (PA)'1. Data collection template' tab

B. Portfolio accounting tab

  1. The main calculations are performed in the'2. Portfolio accounting' tab - do the following quality checks:

  2. Check if the attribution factor is indeed < 1

  3. Review the checkpoints in the tab to confirm emission factors, names, and financed/absolute emissions are correct

  4. Check for any formula breaks and right flow of data

  5. Check the currency conversion using column AB and drag down the formula if needed to populate more rows

  6. Check the date ratio format

  7. Spot check the EFs picked in column AG for each type of data - note that it’s normal to have N/As if the EF methodology in column AF is “GHG assessment result” as it uses the total emissions provided by the client (found in columns L-O in'1. Data collection template' tab)

  8. Most common errors

  9. Currency picked is not in the EXIOBASE database —> you need to apply the exchange rate manually

  10. Country of operation picked is not in the EXIOBASE database —> you need to select the closest country (in term of energy mix for ex)

  11. NACE code picked is not in the EXIOBASE database —> you need to select the closest

  12. Error in unit (tons or kg)

  13. Conversion of the revenue in EUR to apply the EF

C. Data to be uploaded tab

Emission calculation in the platform is always based on the same calculation: Quantity × Emission Factor.

To enable the calculation of the financed emissions of the asset, the Portfolio accounting tab data are used to compute new factors:

  • Quantity: Outstanding amount

  • EF: Financed emissions / Outstanding amount

Thus Quantity × Emission Factor = Financed emissions

  • Absolute emissions - The total quantity of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted into the atmosphere by an entity over a specific period

  • Financed emissions - The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the investment and lending activities of financial institutions, reflecting the indirect emissions generated by the companies or projects they finance.
    Few checks before uploading data:

  • Check the totals of Absolute and Financed emissions match with totals in tab 2. Portfolio accounting

    1. note: it’s okay if there are N/As in column AA - this is due to no revenue value

  • Check the unit of Absolute and Financed emissions: should be written in tons and not kg (be careful when GHG assessment result is used)

  • Check that as many columns are filled as possible, as this will lead to more detailed information being displayed on the platform for each line
Then export the'data upload' tab as a CSV file and upload it through Admeenly into the module to display the emissions by clicking on the green button: Import activities from a file with custom EF. Add all the unmapped columns filled with “Add new - Analysis tag” and delete the empty columns.

D. Graphs to be added tab

Please see step 4 of the Rollout process:

⭕ Automatic processing (E2E module)

No processing since this is an automated module.

♻️ Rebaselining

No rebaselining for Investment modules (e2e and advanced). However, an asset analysis can be performed on a year-on-year basis to monitor the evolution of emissions for each asset.

4. Review the data

non applicable for Investment modules
