Vehicle fleet : How it works & emission factor selection

How the Vehicle fleet module accounts for vehicle manufacturing emissions and selects EFs.

Overview

The Vehicle fleet module covers emissions from the manufacture of purchased or leased vehicles. It uses a simple selection of vehicle type, category and engine type, each mapped to a pre-selected emission factor.

Key use cases

  • Accounting for the manufacturing impact of a company's owned or leased vehicles

  • Applying consistent amortisation rules under BEGES-R and GHG Protocol

  • Optionally recording the whole fleet to support reduction planning

What this module covers

The module covers emissions from the manufacture of purchased or leased vehicles.
Under BEGES-R:

  • Mandatory: include all vehicles (purchased or leased) acquired within the seven years before the end of the assessment period. Emissions are amortised over 7 years. Short-term leases (for example rental cars) are not included.

  • Optional: the entire fleet may be recorded to support reduction strategies, but vehicles acquired outside the 7-year period are not counted in the annual footprint.
    Under the GHG Protocol:

  • Mandatory: include all vehicles (purchased or leased) acquired during the assessment year. Short-term leases are not included.

  • Optional: the entire fleet may be recorded, but vehicles acquired outside the reporting period are not counted.
For each vehicle, the user selects a vehicle type (for example car), a vehicle category (for example SUV) and an engine type (for example hybrid).

How emission factors are matched

For every combination of vehicle type, category and engine type, an emission factor has been pre-selected. This EF is the same for all countries and years.

Emission factor sources

The emission factors are computed by Greenly based on Base Empreinte (ADEME), Carbone 4, Ecoinvent and manufacturer information.

FAQs

Are short-term rentals included in this module?

No. Short-term leases such as rental cars are not included here; travel-related road use is handled in the Business Travel module.

Does the emission factor change by country or year?

No. The EF is pre-selected per combination of type, category and engine type, and is the same across countries and years.

Can I record vehicles that fall outside the mandatory window?

Yes, the whole fleet can be recorded to support reduction planning, but vehicles outside the mandatory window are not counted in the annual footprint.
