Overview

The Business Travel & Fuel Consumption module covers travel and fuel emissions across rail, air and road, including cars owned and leased by the reporting company, plus optional hotel stays.

Key use cases

  • Accounting for business travel from distance, fuel, duration or spend-based inputs

  • Correctly splitting emissions between business travel and owned or leased vehicles

  • Running the same process for GHG Protocol and BEGES-R

What this module covers

The module covers emissions from:

  • Rail travel

  • Air travel

  • Road travel, including cars owned and leased by the reporting company

  • Hotel stays (optional)

How the module works

For each activity, the company selects options (for example train plus high-speed) that define an identifier. That identifier is then used to select the emission factor.

How emission factors are matched

EFs are selected by filtering on:

  • Identifier: the option selected. For example, "train" plus "high-speed" filters all high-speed-train EFs.

  • Methodology: GHG Protocol or BEGES-R

  • Unit: the EF whose unit matches the data provided (distance in passenger.km or km, fuel in kWh or L, duration in nights, amount in currency)

  • Country: the EF with a matching country ID or region, with a default when there is no match (ADEME Base Empreinte for BEGES-R, UK Defra for GHG Protocol)

  • Year: the EF with the closest year

Scope allocation

  • Scope 3.6 Business travel: rail travel, air travel, road travel on short-term lease and taxi, and hotel stays (optional)

  • Scope 1 (mobile combustion) or Scope 2 (electricity consumption): road travel in owned vehicles and long-term leases

Emission factor sources

  • IEA for electricity consumption

  • Hotel Sustainability Benchmarking Index for hotel stays

  • Exiobase or Greenly monetary emission factors for the expense approach

  • Otherwise: Base Empreinte for French and BEGES-R options, UK Defra for the UK and GHG Protocol, US EPA for the US and GHG Protocol

FAQs

Why do some car trips fall under Scope 1 or 2 instead of business travel?

Road travel in vehicles owned by the company or on long-term lease is allocated to Scope 1 (mobile combustion) or Scope 2 (electricity), while short-term lease and taxi stay in Scope 3.6.

Can I use a spend-based input?

Yes. An expense approach is available and uses Exiobase or Greenly monetary emission factors.

Which unit should the data be in?

The module matches the EF to the data unit provided: distance (passenger.km or km), fuel quantity (kWh or L), duration (nights) or amount (currency).
